I always enjoy reading about improving communication as it could make or break a business. Having a system you or your team sticks to for updating clients on progress goes a long way in showing professionalism. I really enjoy using activecollab in my work. Not only can I get information from my team and clients on a project I am working on but, I get updates in my email. So, if a client has an urgent request, it can be fulfilled even when your not at the office.

Fighting the good fight is no walk in the park. Even though the client knows more about their business, they hired you as the designer. I do agree you should take their ideas and work with them as they could open up new possibilities. However, if you do rebut an idea, always have reasoning for your decisions. If you are a designer you should have a better reason than, "it looks better that way." Having a good critic(s) could help your reasoning as well as design. Any design I create, I have criticised for that purpose. I seem to get a better understanding of design concepts each time.

Great Article!

Interesting post. I do agree that the beauty of new project management systems is that they let customers look into project work details. On the other hand, Basecamp is not the best system for that, as it's sometimes really hard to make your clients use the system. I found a more convenient solution - http://www.wrike.com/. This tool integrated this your clients inbox and keeps him informed without the need to log on to the site.

Nice article Jon, thanks for that. I've had little experience dealing with clients one on one so advice like this is really helpful.
